Interview to Luca Formica, CEO and Founder of Develop Players
What does "entrepreneurship" mean to you?
To me, entrepreneurship means understanding a real need and bringing the solution to that problem to market in the best and most efficient way possible. In our case, this translates into creating scientifically validated video games that genuinely help neurodivergent children and adolescents, while also having a sustainable cost and a business model that allows us, as a company, to grow and thrive. Because only by growing can we increase the social impact of our solution. Impact and economic sustainability should not be a contradiction, but two sides of the same coin.
What is the biggest experience or lesson gained on your growth journey so far?
I learned that sometimes it doesn't matter how much better your solution is than existing ones: you also need to be able to bring it to market effectively. In our field, it's not enough to develop scientifically validated video games that work — you need to know how to capture your customers' attention and communicate your value clearly and compellingly. One of the lessons I consider increasingly vital is the ability to tell a story. Great entrepreneurs build a narrative — personal and corporate — that is engaging and creates a community around the mission. You're not just telling people about a product: you're telling them why it exists. And that story, if authentic, attracts customers who don't simply buy a tool, but buy into a vision.
How is your company acting as a game changer in the landscape?
Develop-Players stands out, particularly in the Italian and European landscape, because we build real video games — not digital exercises. This distinction is fundamental. Almost every other tool on the market consists essentially of exercises presented in digital format, without genuine gamification techniques, and struggling to truly engage children and adolescents. Our games, on the other hand, are built on solid scientific foundations and designed to be intrinsically motivating.
What should your life motto be?
"Potential has no limits." It's the thread that runs through everything we do at Develop-Players: we believe every child, regardless of their challenges, has a potential that simply needs to be discovered and unlocked. And the same applies to us as entrepreneurs. There is a phrase I love that always reminds me to think big, and it goes something like this: "Always shoot for the stars — even if you miss, you'll land on the Moon."
ELITE: the European network of private SMEs which accelerates the process to access private and public capital markets. Why can it be the game-changing opportunity companies should consider?
ELITE is an opportunity I would recommend to every entrepreneur, especially those who don't come from a strictly financial background. One of the aspects I appreciate most has been the education on capital markets: it's a world that is otherwise very hard to explore in depth during the early growth stages of a startup. ELITE is also more than just training: it's a community of entrepreneurs facing similar challenges, it provides access to a European network of investors and partners, and visibility in markets that would otherwise be difficult for an SME to reach.
